Choosing a relaxed newborn photographer in Columbus, Ohio

It seems there are so many options for choosing a newborn photographer nowadays. Do you prefer the look of a posed session inside a studio? Something outdoors? Just the baby or the entire family?

As a relaxed newborn photographer in Columbus, Ohio, my favorite approach is one that honors your family’s unique story by capturing your real life.

I’ve personally found that the best setting for that is in your home. It’s both the perfect sentimental backdrop, literally where new life is unfolding, and it’s also the place where you have everything you need. That alone is enough to help you feel more relaxed.

Here’s my approach to having a relaxed newborn photography session:

  1. Have a thorough consultation with your photographer

I take the time to talk over the phone with each expecting mama to figure out exactly what you want captured, what your family dynamic is like, what the light and rooms in your home are like, the time of day everyone is happiest, what to expect and guidance on what to wear. All of this advanced planning leads to a much more relaxing newborn session.

2. Plan for an in-home session

Home is where you’re creating all of your memories with your new baby. Life feels like a dream during those sleepless first few months, so having your photos done in your home can help you remember what it actually felt like. Plus, what a treasure for your baby as they grow, to be able to witness one of their earliest days of life.

3. Don’t clean your house

Seriously, don’t clean for me. If you want to pick up a little clutter, that’s fine, but our goal is to document what life really felt like. If something is distracting or takes away from the overall feeling we’re trying to capture, I’ll move it while I’m there. But don’t you dare scrub the windows (or the toilet - ha!).

4. Let older siblings take a break

I always make sure to give older siblings a lot of attention when I arrive. They’ve just gone through a huge lifestyle shift and may be feeling overwhelmed, anxious, tired and/or a little jealous of the new baby. I treat them like a super star, and when they need a break I can devote more of my attention to the new baby. Bonus: if you’re at home, giving your older children a break is super easy as it’s where you have all the snacks and screens ;)

5. Go with the flow

I let the babies lead the session. When they’re awake, we’ll capture more of the day-in-the-life imagery. Changing, feeding, rocking and reading to the baby. Getting coffee, playing with older siblings, cleaning up spit up. Once they’re asleep, we’ll get more of the “posed” images. This is when I capture all of the delicious details of your baby that you won’t want to forget.
