This work we’re doing - parenting, mothering, teaching our kids how to live the truest lives possible, while navigating a world that feels out of control? IT’S HARD. And it’s beautiful. It deserves to be celebrated.

Portrait of Sarah by Michelle Starkey

Why authentic family photography?

I feel called to provide a space for you and your family where your time together is sacred. Where you can enjoy each other, free of distraction, in a place that holds sentimental value. This will allow you to walk away with photos that feel authentic to your unique family.

I will find the beauty in your lives and attempt to show it to you, because although some days it doesn’t feel like it, you are creating a work of ART, and photography is the best way I know how to bottle up a tiny bit of that art.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words but I’d venture it’s worth far more. I don’t think there are enough words to capture the immense love you have for your family, the fleeting moments of intense joy, frustration, sorrow, and great swelling love that kicks you in the heart each and every day when you’re in the thick of raising a family. So why don’t you let me SHOW it to you instead?

Here’s the most important thing I can tell you about myself, straight from the mouths of my clients: I’m incredibly patient. Now, I don’t know that my kids would agree (ha!), but I will say that I take a nonjudgmental, slow and careful approach towards interacting with children and families, which helps to build trust. I make sure they feel seen and heard before I ever break out the camera.

Trust = comfort = authenticity.

But who are you, Sarah?

I’m a sentimental romantic with a grand sense of adventure. Those qualities go a long way towards shaping my style of photography, which is inspired by film, light, childhood, motherhood, playfulness, and emotional connection.

I’m happiest behind the lens, snuggling with my kids, traveling, gardening, hiking and spending entire days outside without my phone (a rare treat).

I’m attempting to living a slow life in a fast-paced world. To me this means rising early while the world is quiet to write or walk, being in tune with nature, growing our own food when possible, being involved in my community and my kids’ schools, and taking plenty of healthy breaks from screens and social media. All of this allows me to be more present and energized so I can show up for my family and my clients in a meaningful way.

Giving back:

Giving back to my community is hugely important to me. I do this on a consistent basis in two ways:

  1. I host an annual mini-session fundraiser where clients donate to a local organization in exchange for a portrait session. Past recipients include FLOW and KYC.

2. I volunteer with The Gold Hope Project, which connects photographers with families who are navigating childhood cancer and other serious illnesses, in order to provide complementary photosessions for them.

I wouldn’t be able to give my time to these causes without support from clients like you. THANK YOU.

This was a lot about me! Now I’d love to hear about you.
