“What Should We do for our Photo Session?”

Have you been considering a full length session but just have no idea WHAT you would do or how you would fill that time? Sometimes the sheer overwhelm of planning for family photos prevents us from ever taking the first step, even though deep down in our hearts we WANT this.

Do you wish someone would take you by the hand and walk you through the entire process? I offer just that.

We’ll get to the heart of your story and what’s important to you through an in-depth, over-the-phone conversation all about your family.

As you may know by now, I love to capture real life: places and activities that have sentimental value to your family, so that your kids can go back and relive a day of childhood. To give YOU a visual memory of your day to day life.

Today I want to share some ideas for documentary family photography sessions that would be fun and easy (even for dads) that may appeal to you.

  1. Morning Routine

Kids are often happiest in the morning, so why not capture them waking up, snuggling with you, brushing teeth, making and eating breakfast, and getting ready for the day.

2. Bedtime

Similar to morning routine, this can include getting into pjs, bedtime snack, brushing teeth, pillow forts, reading with the flashlight, snuggles in bed with family.

3. Outdoor adventures

Do you love to explore new places together? Family walks, picnics, flying kites, visiting farmer’s markets, running through the sprinkler, camping, fishing, dipping your toes into the creek? Let’s capture it!

4. Play time

Want to ensure your child will be happy throughout the session? Build in lots of playtime. This can be a walk to the neighborhood playground, block towers, making crafts, chalk drawing, blowing bubbles - whatever your child is currently enjoying.

5. Celebrations

While I don’t offer “cake smash” sessions, there’s no reason we can’t include a little cake-smashing during your session. Or maybe you want to have a family dinner to celebrate someone special. Occasions like these can be highly emotional, resulting in beautiful candid images.

6. Family traditions

Do you love to pick apples every year? Bake cookies for the holidays? Can fruits and veggies from the garden? Pizza and movie night? Pool parties? Think about a tradition that’s important to your family, something you’ll want to remember long after your kids have left the nest.

No matter what you choose to do during your session, I want you to rest assured that I’ve got you.

Sometimes plans change, kids rebel, the weather doesn’t cooperate, etc. What matters more than anything else is that you are with your favorite people, paying deep attention to one another, in a time and space carved out just for you. I’ll be along for the ride to document your love for one another in a way that is candid, genuine and creative.

Want to have a conversation about what to do for your family’s next photo session? Please reach out, I’d love schedule time for a no-pressure call to do just that.
