Studio or at home: what’s best for your newborn session?// Columbus newborn photographers

Booking at home ensures your images will be uniquely you

If you’re researching newborn photographers in Columbus, you may notice a range of offerings, from at home, to outdoors, to studio sessions. This is one of those topics for which there’s not a right or wrong answer, just a right answer for YOU. There are absolutely benefits and drawbacks to both, so take some time to consider what type of experience you’re drawn to and how you want your resulting images to look and feel.

The major benefit of working with a studio is being able to walk in and have everything ready for you, often including outfits and sometimes even hair and makeup. Also, if you’re imagining your baby swaddled up in a basket, glowing like a little newborn angel, or propping their head up on their hands or tushy in the air, you will definitely want to work with a studio that specializes in safely posing newborns.

I do NOT work out of a studio and do not offer any of the above, so let me tell you what I do offer and why I think it’s the best way to capture those early days of parenthood. I capture:

  • A glimpse into your life during the first weeks of parenthood, in all its beauty, exhaustion, joy and tenderness.

  • The little details in your home that scream “a baby lives here!”

  • The way you and your partner look at your new baby with complete adoration, and the way you look at each other in awe that this new human is YOURS.

  • How older siblings and pets interact with your new baby in a natural, organic way that could only happen from the comfort of your home.

Some benefits of being at home: you have everything you need, and I bring along outfits, blankets, swaddles and accessories so you don’t have one less thing to stress about. You can take breaks to nurse/feed/change baby from the comfort of your home. If older siblings are included they can easily take breaks. You can capture details from baby’s nursery. You will see your actual life reflected back to you upon viewing your images, during a time that is foggy and dreamlike and may be hard to remember later. Let your photographer capture these memories for you!

Okay I’ll get off my soapbox now :)

If you are considering an in-home newborn session but are uncertain about the light or space in your home, please contact me so we can schedule a zero-commitment facetime call during which I can get a good look at your home and put your concerns at ease. I have yet to come across an unsuitable home for family photos but I am happy to take a look if it will empower you to book the newborn session you truly desire.
